It is located at the centre of Kathmandu city. The durbar square is surreounded with spectacular architecture and exquisitely displays the skills of the Newari artists and artisans over the several centuries. This is the palace from where the Malla and Shah Kings ruled over the city. The square got the name from the statue of Hanuman dated to 1672. In 1975 the then crown prince Birendra Bikram Shah was crowned as the king of Nepal on the platform in the middle of the courtyard. Besides the palace, there are some masterpieces of N epali art and architecture like: Basantapur Palace, Taleju temple, Museum, Kumari House, Kathmandap, A large traditional bell and a Kettle Drum.
